Colours
A bird with a rather round body, large head, mottled plumage and with a long tail. The male and female are colored similarly, although the latter has less contrasting plumage. The forehead, the stripe passing through the eye (mask), and extending from the cantharus, wings, back and tail are black. The rump and wing mirror, the sides of the tail and the cheeks and shoulder white. The white spot on the outer part of the wings is not found in shrikes from the Balearic Islands. There is a rust-colored spot on the parietal and occipital (forming a "cape," larger in males) and the nape of the neck; the underside of the body is whitish-green. The tail has white edges and root.
The last certain breeding of the red-headed shrike in Poland took place in 1997. Since then, there are no observations confirming the nesting of this species in the country, so it has been given the category of regionally extinct (RE).
