Colours
The male in mating coat has the top of the body golden yellow, with dark mottling. The underside of the body is black. The golden color is separated from the black by a wide white stripe running from the head to the back of the body, where it is widest on the under-leg covers, which are thus completely white. The female in mating coat is similar to the male, but the black underside is covered with white spots. Both sexes in the resting coat have a light underside. The neck and breast are yellowish, and the rest is white.
The golden plover was still a rare but probably regular nesting species in the northern part of the country in the 19th century. It has not been confirmed to breed in Poland for at least a century, hence it has been classified as regionally extinct (RE).
